Mothercombe is a great location favoured by local sailors when Bigbury is just too much, or as an alternative in a Southerly when Bigbury is dead onshore.  It others both waves and flat water.  It dries out completely 3hrs before LW.

Best Conditions

It is a fabulous spot in very strong winds, when the rest of the SW coast line is being punished by a large SW swell.  It is a location which provides very fun and forgiving onshore wave sailing conditions.  The waves are bigger the further upwind you go.  Or if you prefer the flat water then just choose to sail downwind from the break in front of the launch spots.

Best To Avoid

LW because the estuary dries out.  It does not work in any other wind direction other than a S - SW.  If the wind forecast is for only 16 knots, then you would be better going to Bigbury, unless you want to take the dog for a walk.

Local Hazards

You will be sailing in a estuary which will eventually dry out as the tide ebbs.  It is worth considering that if you break any kit you could be taken either way by the tide depending upon its direction, therefore always check your kit and sail with others.  If on your own it can be a very remote location midweek.

Rigging area and Launch access

You can access the water from both sides of the River Erme, the west side is Mothercombe, and the East Side is Wonwell.  Both have a small slipway leading to the beach which is suitable for rigging. There are no facilities on the Wonwell side.  During the  summer months in the Mothecombe car park there is a National Trust cafe with toilet facilities.

Access and car parking

Mothercombe - There is a car park, which charges during the the roadside parking is not permitted between Mar  Oct.  There is no parking at the bottom of the hill next to the beach so be prepared for a 5 minute walk with your  kit.

Wonwell - Is accessed through the back roads from the A379 once you have driven east through Modbury.  Follow the signs for Bigbury then Kingston, and then Wonwell.  Parking is on the verge along side the road above the river.  Spaces are limited with a small turning area at the end of the road to get out.  It is recommended that big vans avoid this option and use Mothercombe instead.
