Slapton Sands is to the west of Torbay, between Dartmouth and Salcombe.  It offers a long beach, which faces E/SE, and in a big southerly is cross shore and provides shelter from westerly swells.  Thus providing an alternative location for those seeking a less challenging option in these conditions.  In a SE/E it can become a very challenging place to sail with big shore dump developing.  A NE wind direction will also provide fun cross shore sailing.

Best Conditions

Southerly for flat water sailing.  A SE for fun to challenging cross on conditions. A NNE if there is any swell from the E/NE could potentially produce some starboard tack wave riding. 

 

Conditions to avoid 

A strong easterly with swell from the East or South East.

 

Local hazards 

The shore dump can be fierce on its day, allow it some respect.

 

Local amenities

There are three car parks along the beach, each ave Toilet facilities.  There are four campsites near by allowing for all tastes and budgets.  Each of of the three villages along the beach, Torcross to the south, Slapton in the middle and, and Strete to the North have shops and pubs.

 

Access

The best way to approach the beach is by using the A379, which runs between Dartmouth and Kingsbridge.  All the car parks along the beach are pay and display.
